991 Fifth Avenue is a magnificent five-story townhouse located just across the street from the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Built in 1900 on the trailing edge of the Gilded Age, when Fifth Avenue was called the “street of dreams” and the neighborhood included so many Vanderbilts, Astors, Carnegies and other barons of industry and finance that it was known as “Millionaires’ Row”.
The brick and white limestone building, with its wrought iron grille entrance, arched leaded windows and two balconies overlooking Fifth Avenue were considered to be an exemplary model of the Beaux Arts style. The beautiful exterior was the work of Turner and Killian, while the interior, with its spacious and elegantly appointed rooms, was designed by the well known architect Ogden Codman, Jr.
Early in the 21st Century, more than one hundred years after its construction, the building underwent a sixteen month renovation and restoration. All of the windows in the building were replaced, the façade and interior marble cleaned and re-pointed, long-hidden leaded glass skylights were uncovered, removed, restored and replaced, the entire home was repainted in its original colors, an HVAC system was installed with climate controlled units servicing each room, and state of the art conference rooms and board rooms were created.
